Dr. Zhivago
(1965, USA) Directed by David Lean. Good snow, pretty Julie Christie.
English critic Tom Milne: "Visually impressive in a picture postcard
sort of way. Otherwise an interminable emasculation of Pasternak's
novel, seemingly trying to emulate 'Gone With the Wind' in romantic
vacuity as Russia is torn by revolution and Omar Sharif's Zhivago moons
on about the elusive love of his life. Rod Steiger and Tom Courtenay
excepted, all the performances are very uncomfortable." 193m. Paramount

methodical, gorgeous and chilling, Akerman's masterpiece covers three
days in the life of a widow (Delphine Seyrig) who supports herself and
her son by prostituting herself each afternoon. Akerman's minimalist
style is used to its best effect here, with the woman's deadening
routine described in meticulous detail. By film's end, Akerman
redefines tragedy. 201m. 35mm. $4. DOC Films (773)702-8575, 1212 E.

*Force of Evil
(1948, USA) Directed by Abraham Polonsky. A masterpiece. A moody noir
that rewards many viewings, Polonsky's singular debut is a triumph of
every kind--acting, writing, direction, design, conception. Polonsky was
a New York lawyer, a novelist and also dedicated Marxist. He wrote the
fine script for "Body and Soul," directed "Force of Evil," then was
blacklisted for his beliefs. Our great loss. He wrote and directed a
handful of times afterwards, but if he had worked consistently as a
director instead of remaining behind fronts for twenty years, who knows
what he--and we--might have learned. 78m. 35mm. $6. Block Museum of
Art(847)491-4900, 40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, 8.
