![]() Shopping around Another man's treasure
Hockshop, the multi-functional clothing and arts business, is holding a
twenty-hour farewell sale on May 21-23 before the owners, artist Dolan
Geiman and business manager Ali Walsh, take a temporary leave in
Virginia. Goods across the gamut, mostly "found" and screen-painted
items, will cost 10 cents to $500 and include drawings, stitched and
re-sewn clothes, small panel paintings, bed sheets, framed prints and
collages and reupholstered furniture.
"It's kind of like recycling. There's so much stuff out there... and
I don't want to buy something already made," the artist says,
explaining
the philosophy behind his choice of materials in his artwork.
Geiman, along with Walsh, returns to his home state of Virginia, to
teach an art workshop to underprivileged high-school students. Since
the
workshop will take place in a large barn studio, where he'll also be
living, the artist will focus on creating a body of sculptural works
which he previously lacked space to produce. His work will continue to
be available for purchase on the web.
"Most of the teachers are like `this is the way to do it: you can be
a carpenter or an electrician,'" the artist says, referring to his
own
schooling experience in the South. "You have to be a redneck. I want
to
say, you know what, go design a cereal box."
After he returns to his self-proclaimed home base in Chicago in
October for two shows at the Judy Saslow and Union League galleries,
Geiman plans on reopening Hockshop in Chicago. He hopes the new
Hockshop
will become a space to buy and create art. "The idea for me is to go
(to
Virginia) and establish a satellite. Hockshop is essentially a mobile
art-making unit, and I'm spreading the idea of making affordable
portables." The Hockshop farewell sale takes place May 21-23 at 2039 W. 21st
Street, (773)927-7164.
